Overview
Our take
MyCase is a practice management platform first and a legal AI tool second, and that is its strength: the 8am IQ features work on the cases, documents and messages already in the system, and the Case Assistant cites the files it draws from. Pricing is fully published, which makes it easy to budget. The catch is that the most useful AI features, the Case Assistant and OCR Discovery Assistant, only come with the top Advanced plan, and the product is built around US firms.
MyCase legal AI sits inside a practice management system that small and mid-sized law firms have used since 2010. MyCase handles the day-to-day running of a firm (intake, cases, calendars, documents, time, invoices and payments) and, through its 8am IQ features, it can now summarise a case file, read scanned documents, and help polish what you write.
MyCase is part of 8am, the company formerly known as AffiniPay, which also makes the LawPay payments platform. More than 19,000 firms use MyCase, and it is partnered with over 130 bar associations. That background shows in the product: it is built around the way US firms bill, collect and handle trust money, with AI added on top rather than the other way round.
What MyCase legal AI actually does
The AI features are branded 8am IQ, and there are four of them.
The Case Assistant searches across a case’s notes, filings and messages so you can ask a question and get an answer from your own files. It builds timelines and summaries from real case data, and every answer comes with citations back to the source document, so you can check it before relying on it. The Discovery Assistant runs OCR on scanned PDFs and image-based documents, turning them into searchable text and feeding them into the Case Assistant. For firms buried in scanned discovery, this is the feature that saves the most time.
The Document Assistant reads long documents such as contracts and pleadings and produces summaries that highlight key clauses, parties and deadlines, which you can save to the case. The Writing Assistant polishes tone and grammar in emails, notes and case summaries and rewrites dense language into plain, client-ready copy.
MyCase legal AI runs on OpenAI models through OpenAI’s business API, not the consumer ChatGPT app. MyCase says customer data is not used to train those models, and the AI only sees files the user already has permission to open. Prompts are pre-configured for each task, which keeps answers focused but makes it less flexible than an open-ended AI chat. As with any legal AI, the output still needs a lawyer’s review.
The practice management side
Most of what you pay for is the practice management platform. MyCase covers client intake forms and a legal CRM for tracking leads, eSignature and document generation from templates, automated workflows, a shared calendar, document management with unlimited storage, and a secure client portal with two-way texting and chat. On the money side there is time and expense tracking, invoicing, trust accounting, financial reporting, and online payments powered by LawPay, with IOLTA-compliant handling and next-day deposits.
MyCase connects to more than 70 other apps on the Pro plan, including QuickBooks, Outlook, Gmail, Google Calendar, Dropbox and Zapier, and the Advanced plan adds an open API. There are mobile apps for iPhone and Android.
MyCase pricing and plans
MyCase pricing is published in full, which is not always the case with legal software. There are three plans, all priced per user per month in USD:
- Basic: $50 billed annually, or $60 billed monthly. Case management, time, invoicing, trust accounting and online payments. No AI features.
- Pro: $100 billed annually, or $120 billed monthly. Adds eSignature, workflows, intake and CRM, texting, 70+ integrations, and the 8am IQ Writing and Document Assistants.
- Advanced: $130 billed annually, or $150 billed monthly. Adds the Case Assistant and the OCR Discovery Assistant, advanced document automation, conflict checks, split billing and the open API.
In short, the full MyCase legal AI toolkit needs the Advanced plan. MyCase Accounting is an optional add-on at $39 per user per month, and LawPay payments have no monthly fee, only processing rates. There is a 10-day free trial with no credit card, and no long-term contract or setup fee. You can cancel from the settings at any time, but fees already paid are not refunded. Check the official MyCase pricing page for current figures before you buy.
Security and privacy
MyCase encrypts data in transit and stores it with 256-bit AES encryption in Amazon data centres, with nightly backups to Amazon S3. Its parent company 8am publishes a trust centre listing a SOC 2 Type 2 report and PCI DSS compliance. Access is controlled by user roles, and activity is tracked. For the AI features, data sent to OpenAI is encrypted, is not used for training, and may be kept by OpenAI for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring before deletion.
Who it’s for
MyCase legal AI makes the most sense for solo lawyers and small to mid-sized US firms that want case management, billing, payments and AI in one place at a published price. Firms that live in scanned discovery will get the most from the Advanced plan. If you only want an AI writing tool, or you practise outside the US, where its trust accounting and payments setup matter less, a lighter or more local tool may suit you better.
