Updated October 2026. In a world flooded with AI assistants, Claude has become the tool that professionals, developers and enterprises actually trust. Here is what it is, what changed this year, and why people keep switching to it.
If you’ve been paying attention to AI in 2026, you’ve seen Claude everywhere: in law firms reviewing contracts, in startups shipping code, in research labs working through entire paper libraries. Developed by Anthropic, Claude AI isn’t just another chatbot. It’s an AI system built to be genuinely helpful while staying honest and safe. This guide explains what Claude AI is, what it can do today, which model to pick, what it costs, and why it has become one of the most respected AI tools on the market.
What’s New in Claude Since April 2026
Read our original guide in April? A lot has changed. Here are the biggest updates at a glance:
- A new top tier above Opus. Claude Fable 5.1 (September 1) is now Anthropic’s most capable generally available model. Its restricted twin, Claude Mythos 5.1, is limited to vetted organisations.
- A whole new 5.5 family. Claude Opus 5.5 (September 22), Sonnet 5.5 (September 28) and Haiku 5.5 (October 7) replace the 4.6 models we covered in April.
- 1M-token context on every current model. Even the small Haiku model now reads up to 1 million tokens, up from 200K for Haiku 4.5.
- Lower prices. Opus 5.5 costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, down from $5 and $25 for Opus 4.6. Haiku 5.5 starts at just $0.10 and $0.50.
- Claude in more places. Cowork is now part of the main Claude app, and Claude works inside Chrome, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Slack (Claude Tag, in beta for Team and Enterprise).
- More on the free plan. Free users now get Claude Design, Slides and Docs alongside chat, web search and Artifacts.
What is Claude AI?
Claude AI is a family of large language models (LLMs) and apps created by Anthropic. It helps with writing, coding, research, analysis, customer support and complex reasoning, and it can now produce finished work such as documents, spreadsheets, slides and designs. Claude was built around a clear philosophy: be helpful, harmless, and honest.
In practice, Claude declines genuinely harmful requests, tells you when it doesn’t know something rather than making things up, and handles nuanced or sensitive topics thoughtfully instead of blindly complying or shutting down.
QUICK FACT
The name “Claude” is widely believed to be a nod to Claude Shannon, the father of information theory, reflecting Anthropic’s roots in rigorous scientific thinking.
Today you can use Claude AI on the web at claude.ai, in desktop and mobile apps, inside Chrome, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Slack, through Claude Code for software development, and via the developer API. Businesses can also reach it through Amazon Bedrock, Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry.
The Company Behind Claude — Anthropic
To understand Claude, you need to understand Anthropic. The company was founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei (CEO) and Daniela Amodei (President), along with several colleagues who had held senior roles at OpenAI. Their goal was to put AI safety research at the centre of how frontier AI gets built.
| 2021 | Anthropic founded by Dario and Daniela Amodei, with a mission centred on AI safety. |
| 2023 | Claude released publicly in March, trained with Anthropic’s Constitutional AI method. |
| 2024 | Claude 3 family launches with Haiku, Sonnet and Opus model tiers. |
| 2025 | Claude 4 models and Claude Code arrive, followed by Sonnet 4.5, Haiku 4.5 and Opus 4.5. |
| Early 2026 | Claude 4.6 to 4.8 Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 (February), Opus 4.7 (April) and Opus 4.8 (May). |
| June 2026 | Fable 5 and Mythos 5 open a new tier above Opus. Access was paused on June 12 to comply with US export controls and restored on July 1 after the controls were lifted. |
| Mid 2026 | Sonnet 5 and Opus 5 launch on June 30 and July 24. |
| Sept–Oct 2026 | Fable 5.1 and the 5.5 family Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 (September 1), Opus 5.5 (September 22), Sonnet 5.5 (September 28) and Haiku 5.5 (October 7). |
Anthropic’s core training innovation is Constitutional AI (CAI), a method that teaches Claude to judge its own outputs against a written set of principles. It reduces harmful outputs without relying only on human labellers. Anthropic is also a Public Benefit Corporation, which commits it to weigh its safety mission alongside profit.
Key Features That Set Claude Apart
Claude AI packs a set of capabilities that make it a go-to choice for demanding work. Here’s what stands out in late 2026:
1 Million Token Context Window
Every current Claude model, from Haiku 5.5 to Fable 5.1, can hold up to 1 million tokens (roughly 750,000 words) in a single conversation and write up to 128K tokens in one reply. That is enough for an entire codebase, a stack of contracts or months of documentation at once.
Adaptive Thinking and Effort Control
Claude decides how long to think based on how hard the task is. Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 always reason before answering, and you can raise or lower the effort level in claude.ai to trade speed for depth.
Constitutional AI Safety
Claude is trained to check its outputs against ethical principles, which makes it more consistent in high-stakes settings. Anthropic says its newest Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 model is also its most robust yet against prompt injection attacks.
Connectors, MCP and Plugins
Connect Claude to the apps you already use, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack and Salesforce, through connectors built on the open Model Context Protocol (MCP). You can add plugins from a marketplace, build custom connectors, and teach Claude repeatable skills your whole team can share.
Projects and Memory
Upload background documents once into a Project and every conversation stays grounded in them. Claude can also remember context from past chats and follow standing instructions you set for all conversations.
Claude Code (Agentic Dev)
Claude Code works directly in your codebase from the terminal, desktop, web or mobile. It can plan and build features, fix bugs and run tests, and with agent teams several Claude agents can work on different parts of a project in parallel. Claude Code is included from the Pro plan up.
Claude Across Your Apps
Claude is no longer just a chat window. It works inside Chrome, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, answers in Slack through Claude Tag, and the desktop app can work with files and folders on your computer. It can also browse websites and, in beta, operate your screen.
Docs, Slides and Designs
Ask for a report, a deck or a landing page and Claude produces it as an editable Artifact you can share or keep refining. Claude Design, Slides and Docs are available even on the free plan.
Vision & Document Analysis
Upload images, screenshots, charts and PDFs and Claude will read, summarise and analyse them. It also works fluently in dozens of languages, including Hindi, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic.
Claude’s Model Lineup in 2026
Anthropic now offers four current models, each balancing speed, intelligence and cost differently. All four share a 1M-token context window, a 128K output limit and a June 2026 knowledge cutoff.

THE VERDICT
Claude leads on writing, long documents, careful reasoning and agentic coding. ChatGPT is the most versatile all-rounder with built-in image generation. Gemini is the natural pick if you live inside Google’s ecosystem. Choose based on your main workflow; there is no single winner for everyone.
Why Claude Is Gaining Popularity
Claude AI’s rise isn’t accidental. Several factors have come together to make it the AI of choice for people who want more than a party trick:
It’s honest in ways other AIs aren’t
Claude tells you when it doesn’t know something, and it pushes back on problematic requests with an explanation rather than a wall of refusals. Independent tester Artificial Analysis found Haiku 5.5 had a lower hallucination rate than the models it was compared with.
Enterprise confidence in safety
For legal, financial and healthcare work, a confident wrong answer can be costly. Claude’s safety-first training, no model training on Team plan content by default, zero data retention options and a HIPAA-ready plan are exactly what risk-averse organisations look for.
The 1M context window changes everything
Most AI tools make you chunk and resubmit content. With 1 million tokens now standard on every current Claude model, even the low-cost Haiku 5.5, you can work with an entire codebase or a year of documents in one conversation.
Agentic workflows are genuinely autonomous
Claude can now plan, act and check its own work over long tasks. Claude Code agent teams, scheduled tasks that run on their own and models like Opus 5.5 built for long-running work move Claude from assistant to genuine collaborator.
Pricing has become very competitive
The free plan includes Sonnet, Haiku, web search, Artifacts, Design, Slides and Docs. Pro costs $20 a month and adds Claude Code and Opus. On the API, Opus 5.5 is 20% cheaper per token than Opus 4.6, and Haiku 5.5 is the cheapest Claude model yet.
Claude AI FAQ
Is Claude AI free?
Yes. The free plan includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, Artifacts, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, using the Sonnet and Haiku models. Paid plans start at $20 a month for Pro.
Which Claude model is best?
For most people, Sonnet 5.5 offers the best balance of speed and quality. Anthropic suggests Opus 5.5 as the starting point for demanding work, Fable 5.1 for the hardest reasoning and long agentic tasks, and Haiku 5.5 for fast, high-volume jobs.
What is Claude Mythos?
Claude Mythos 5.1 is the same model as Fable 5.1 with different safeguards for cybersecurity and life sciences research. It is only available to vetted organisations through Anthropic’s verification programs.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
It depends on the job. Claude is often preferred for writing, long documents and coding, while ChatGPT offers built-in image generation and a broad feature set. Many people use both.
Can Claude AI search the web and create images?
Claude can search the web for current information on every plan. It creates designs, slides, documents and charts, but it is not a photo-style image generator like ChatGPT or Google’s Nano Banana.
Final Verdict
Claude is not trying to be everything to everyone. It is trying to be the most reliable, trustworthy and genuinely intelligent AI assistant for people who need to get serious work done.
If you’re a developer, Claude Code and a million-token context make it uniquely powerful for large codebases. If you work in a regulated industry, its safety-first design and enterprise controls are hard to beat. If you’re a writer or knowledge worker, the quality of Claude’s prose and reasoning still stands apart.
2026 has been Claude’s biggest year yet: a new Fable tier, a faster and cheaper 5.5 family, 1M-token context everywhere, and Claude showing up inside the apps people already use. That kind of momentum happens when a tool genuinely works.
The people who have been paying attention to Claude have rebuilt entire workflows around it. The people who haven’t are still copy-pasting context into every new chat.
